Medical and veterinary support
The N.O.P. has an avian specialist veterinarian, Dr. H. van der Horst. Her private practice is located at the front of the park. Each and every day Dr. van der Horst meets with the management and staff to discuss and assess the needs, problems, solutions and treatments of our resident parrots. Every bird that is brought to us receives a complete and thorough exam. Those suffering from illness or disease are put into their own cage in 'sick bay' (restricted quarantine area). All others are held in general quarantine for 2 months, monitored carefully during this time, and then introduced into their new aviary.
Death of a Parrot
Birds, which die while being in our care, will first be examined by our own vet. Then they will be sent to the NOIVBD. Here an autopsy will be performed. We receive the result of this autopsy and keep a record of each bird. (At request) we will inform the previous owner about the cause of death of "their" bird.
Professors and students can learn a great deal about bacteria, viruses and contagius diseases from these birds. Results can be used to take precautionary measures so that many more bird's lives can be saved in the future. Thanks to this gathered knowlegde the N.O.P. are able to anticipate quickly in case of diseases and take precautionary measures.
