What is the N.O.P.?
The Dutch Foundation for the Refuge and Care of Parrots (N.O.P.) is a refuge center for all exotic birds, specifically parrots.
Since 1987 we have been busy taking in and caring for parrots. For several reasons their owners could no longer take care of them. We take in healthy parrots, but more often we have to deal with ill, weak or stressed parrots.
Private persons, organizations, government agencies such as Customs and A.I.D. (a.k.a. Fish and Wildlife Management Dutch equivalent) bring the exotic parrots to us free of charge. It is because the welfare and health of the animals is our highest priority, that they are placed within the protection of our sanctuary as soon as possible.
The N.O.P. owns property measuring 80,000 sq. meters (aprox 19.75 acres) with over 100 cages and aviaries. Here volunteers and an avian vet care for the animals. The birds receive a home for the rest of their lives.
There is also an educational center in our park where visitors can learn about parrots in the wild and the problems that come with keeping a parrot as a pet.
The Dutch Foundation for the Refuge and Care of Parrots guarantees and adheres to strict rules that govern the custody and care of all parrots that we take in. The birds brought to us will never be used for trade, animal testing or be sold. The vet, in cooperation with the NOP, makes sure there is continuous medical care.
The financing is and will be totally covered by the generosity of private donors, sponsors and gifts.
The park, which is run by the NOP, is open to the public. Donors have free access to the park all year round. Those who are not (yet) donors have to pay an entry fee. This fee is used for the care of the birds and the maintenance of the park.
Since the founding of the NOP, more than 2,200 animals have been taken in. (Not all are parrots!) These animals have all received a good home on the grounds of the Parrot-Inn.
