Buildings for confiscation by the Government
On the Parrot Park there are several buildings that you as a visitor cannot visit. On this page you can have a “short” look…..
The Public Inspection Service building
The P.I.S. building, opened in May 2000, is one of the collecting buildings for e.g. the relief of every confiscated animal. This P.I.S. building you as a visitor can never visit because if also is a quarantine residence.
On this page there are photo’s so that you can have a glimpse furtively behind the scenes.
In this enormous covered complex of 36 x 24 metres there are more than 80 aviaries, tens of terrariums and some other relief cages. The building is also provided with a big private feeding kitchen.
The animals stay with us because e.g. they have been confiscated by the Military Police at Schiphol, because of smuggling or the missing of the right permissions.
It is also possible that the P.I.S. has confiscated the animals because the owner did not take good care or e.g. has not got at his disposal of the applied legal papers. E.g. you have to show the origin of a parrot and it has to be provided by a seamlessly closed and fitting foot band. Even on bird fairs these parrots are confiscated because the owner is out of touch with this, aware or not. The Judge will decide whether the animal has to be given back to the owner or that the right of property expires. In the last case the animal will be placed in our park.
At the outside part of this building volunteers worked hard to realise new shelters. On the photo you can see that 36 aviaries have been built on to! These aviaries are built on piles through which they can be kept clean easily by the volunteers. The night houses are placed in the P.I.S. building itself and are warmed of course. Also here we practised our experiences in practice: all night houses are supplied with feeding hatches and can be cleaned very easily. The parrots can go outdoors by a small hatch. We have the possibility to close the hatches in case of strong frost.
State quarantines
The D.C.C.P. gives shelter to many animals that have been confiscated. Severe rules and quarantine protocols are necessary to be considered as an official crisis centre for State enterprises. Also for the Public Service for the Inspection of Cattle and Meat (P.S.I.C.M.).
Per 1 January 2002 there has come into force a more severe legislation concerning quarantines. We too had to carry through several adaptations i.e. realise newly-built houses. On 1 February 2002 the D.C.C.P. received the contract for cooperation and two quarantines were agreed to by the P.S.I.C.M.
That this is special, appears from the fact that the D.C.C.P. is the first one in the Netherlands that carried out a score of 100%!!! On 2 February 2002 the quarantines were put into use at once and the first birds were put into them. So we meet the needs of all demanded standards for crisis centres for as well the State as for private relief with problems about birds.
The two P.S.I.C.M. quarantines are completely isolated at the back of the terrain and are closed for public. Only permanent staff of caretakers are allowed to be in these rooms.
The quarantines are necessary because every bird that comes from outside the European borders into the Netherlands have to go into quarantine. This is to prevent that any infectious illness could be transported.
When birds enter, between the 7th and the 15th day dung is taken away. Our own veterinary arranges this in cooperation with a veterinary of the P.S.I.C.M. The sampled of dung are sent to a laboratory and controlled on e.g. bird plague and bird flue. When the result is negative, the animals are released by the veterinary of the P.S.I.C.M.
