The Monkey House

We proudly opened our Monkey House on October 13, 2005. This is where we keep our population of ring-tailed lemurs. And you can visit them!
Visitors have to go through a special sluice, which leads directly into the lemurs’ home.
Our ring-tailed lemurs come from a breeding group that is kept by the Amersfoort Animal Park. The breeding program is going so well that this zoo ended up with a suplus of males. We expect to receive more of these animals soon, estimating that we will end up in Eindhoven with a final population of about twenty lemurs.
We also have a collection of strepsirrhini, a species that looks very much like a monkey, but in fact belongs to a slightly more primitive, monkey-like family. Visitors can view these delightful creatures in their outdoor run. The whole reason we decided to house this fascinating species was to offer the public more, and we seem to have succeeded – visitor tallies continue to increase. We offer our strepsirrhini an outdoor field with climbing ropes to keep them happy and occupied, and their indoor housing has modern floor heating. “They are happy here!” say Van Meegen.
“Visitors can enter through a sluice and walk around in the animals’ home, as long as they remain on the paths!
