Turtles and Tortoises
You will encounter both turtles and tortoises at our park. The tortoises have a special spot in our Mammal Pavilion. Various species of turtles also live with us.
Turtles Here’s yet another unique NOP project: a special turtle pond. As you will read in each of our newsletters, we regularly receive turtles in need of shelter. Often these are animals who have grown too large for their owners’ taste (or for their aquarium), at which point they are brought to us. We used to place these turtles in our Tropical Pavilion, but there is only so much space indoors. When it began to get too crowded for the animals’ best interest, we began researching other options. To our delight, research shows that turtles do very well in suitable outdoor ponds. So we went to work on adapting one of our large ponds specially for the turtles.
In June 1999, we proudly opened this turtle area. Since then, tens of turtles have been able to move into their new home, which they share with various fish species. Our artificial ponds play a prominent role in our park. Many kinds of animals live free outdoors, visiting the ponds to bathe or to drink. Our carefully landscaped ponds are a delight for the eye!
