Smaller Aviaries
Sometimes birds can’t live in large groups in a large aviary. Conditions might not be good enough to survive in a large group or because there are too few congeners.
That is reason enough to supply such a group of birds with appropriate accommodation. In the park are several smaller aviaries in which these groups of birds are housed and to all of these aviaries heated nighthouses have been added.
The Octagonals
From the opening in 1992 on there have been 14 so-called “octagonals” spread over our beautiful park and these aviaries also have been provided with heated nighthouses.
Buildings with smaller aviaries
Since 2000 we have erected a number of large buildings with nice parrot aviaries attached to their outer walls. These aviaries are being used for parrots with flying problems of some sort, but we sometimes place a couple of a special species in a separate aviary in stead of placing them in a large group.
The units that we use for this type of buildings were previously used as offices or other temporary accommodations. Our volunteers in the meantime have gained so much experience that they can adapt everything in accordance with the strict regulations for bird refuges. After a lot of demolition work and adaptation an old building gets a new function. This “new” building is fully equipped with heated inner spaces and fine aviaries on the outside.
In winter we can even use the inner court as an extra refuge.
The “Winter Residence”
From the moment we moved to the “Papegaaienpark” i.e. Parrot Park in 1992 this was the building that stood at the top of our wishing list: a new and above all a heated “winter residence”.
Through lack of time and money this plan never came to fruition, but finally thanks to financial support from Kids for Animals, ASN-Bank and the Dutch Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals we could realise our dream. Two days before the set in of frost in the middle of the winter of 1996 the parrots were able to move into their new territories. To show their gratitude we were greeted with a deafening noise each time we entered. Earplugs required.
